I’m going to be totally honest; I love Canada. I've experienced the stereotypical niceness that everyone talks about. They put gravy on fries; clearly these people aspire to greatness in all things.
So I was quite surprised to read about how they too had major racial tensions that people had to fight against. One such person was Viola Desmond.
During a night out in the theater, Desmond was told she had to leave the whites only section, and she was like “how bout no”. And in refusing she kick started the Civil Rights movement in Canada. Because she didn't mess around.
Because they were petty, the powers that were charged her with a tax violation that was routinely used to enforce segregation. Really? You have nothing else going on in your life? You're gonna unjustly accuse people of tax violations? That's how you choose to live your life? Pathetic.
In 2010 Canada was like, “You know what? We were the worst. Here's a posthumous pardon, and we'd like to put you in a bank note in 2018.” From false tax accusations to being put on money. Full. Circle.
