So the fact that this next woman accomplished any of the things we’re about to tell you is a big deal. The fact that she did them in Iran, which, no offense, is kind of known for being not the greatest to women, makes this a HUGE deal. Buckle up.
Because we’d like to introduce Shirin Ebadi.
Born in Iran in 1947, this chick defied convention and went to law school in the 60s and eventually in 1975 became the first female judge in Iran. How cool is that?!
Then in 1979 Iran had a Britney 2007 breakdown moment and became ultra conservative. The government demoted our girl, the president of the Tehran city court, to a secretary. Now there is nothing wrong with secretarial work. But girl was a respected top judge. We're going to need you to simmer, Iranian government.
Eventually she got her right to practice law back and took on the cases of the most abused and maligned, especially child abuse cases. She is also an outspoken advocate for women’s rights.
In 2003 the world acknowledges that this woman is an all around amazing human, and she became the first Iranian recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.
I'd like to think that if they ever met she and RBG would be besties.
